First published in Hindi in 1957 as a long story named Badnaam Gali, it created a furore, for it was the first of its kind to discuss ‘homosexuality’, a subject kept under the wraps so far... this is a novel which tells the story of 57 lanes joined to a road, like ribs to the backbone. Written in the back waters of Uttar Pradesh, the most populated state of Indian Republic, it describes characters that are fearless, and yet command a lot of respect from their friends and acquaintances

Later in the 60's a film named Badnaam Basti was made on the novel. After the film, another version of the novel was published with the name Badnaam Basti. Later Kamleshwar published it as One Street Fifty Seven Lanes in 1979 with Rajpal and sons.

(Possibly the novel that was published in the Hans was named, Badnaam Gali which Kamleshwar doesn't inform in the preface)
